Claim
US President Biden confirmed that his team was behind Donald Trump’s indictment to stop him from taking power again.

Fact
Old video of Biden from November 2022 answering a question on how he would reassure the G7 that Trump would not return to power in the States.

The ruling Democratic Party in the US has come under fire from the opposition for ‘weaponizing law enforcement’, after the indictment of former president and Republican front runner for 2024 presidential elections, Donald Trump, in a hush money case. Trump himself claimed that the “fake case” against him was simply part of a Democratic conspiracy to interfere with next year’s presidential polls.

In this background, a 16 seconds long video of US President Joe Biden purportedly saying that he is making sure that Trump “does not become the President again” has gone viral online.

Several social media users shared the video claiming, “Biden all but confirmed that his team is coordinating these Trump indictments to “stop Trump from taking power again” “

Fact Check/Verification

We looked up a phrase from the POTUS ‘comments, “legitimate efforts of our Constitution” and “Biden” on Google. This led us to a press release by the White House, dated November 9, 2022.

We skimmed through the release and found the same statement made by Biden in the viral footage.

Notably, the POTUS was addressing a press conference after the midterm elections in November 2022, when he was quizzed on how he would “reassure” that “the former President will not return,” to which Biden replied that he would make sure “under legitimate efforts of our Constitution, Trump “does not become the next President again”

The exact sequence of conversation can be seen below.

Journalist: “So the entire genesis of that G7 conversation was tied to your predecessor, who is about to launch another campaign.  So how do you reassure them, if that is the reason for their questioning, that the former President will not return or that his political movement, which is still very strong, will not — “

Biden:  “Oh, yeah?”

Journalist: once again take power in the United States?

Biden:  Well, we just have to demonstrate that he will not take power by — if we — if he does run.  I’m making sure he, under legitimate efforts of our Constitution, does not become the next President again.

Further, a keyword search for “POTUS,” “press conference” & “midterm elections” led us to the video of the event on C-SPAN website.

Around 25:50 minutes into the video, we spotted the widely shared video of Biden’s remarks on Trump.

Conclusion

We could thus conclude that an old video of US President Biden replying to a question on a scenario of Donald Trump’s “return” to the POTUS office has been taken out of context.

Result: Missing Context
