India’s recent victory over Pakistan in Asia Cup dominated the social media platforms during the first few days of the past week. While a digitally altered video was shared claiming to show sheikhs celebrating India’s victory following Hardik Pandya’s winning six, an old video showing Pakistani cricket fans breaking TV was falsely linked to the country’s recent defeat. Another video from Bangladesh was passed off with a false communal angle. From visuals of a replica shrine shared to show “rare sight” of Tirupati Temple, to an altered picture showing anti-Imran Khan protestors misspelt “condemn” as “condom,” here are our top five fact checks from the past week:

Viral Video Claiming Arabs Celebrated India’s Asia Cup Win Over Pakistan Is Edited

Following India’s win over Pakistan in an Asia Cup 2022 encounter at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, several social media users shared a video claiming to show  “sheikhs in Dubai jumping with joy” after the winning strike by Hardik Pandya. Newschecker’s investigation revealed that an old clip of the president of a Kuwaiti club celebrating his team winning a domestic football cup used in the viral video to show Arabs in the Dubai cricket stadium celebrating India’s win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Yet Another Video Of Buildings On Fire In Bangladesh Shared With Communal Claim

A video showing a raging blaze engulfing a set of buildings as the fire department attempts to tackle the fire, is being shared by a section of social media users, claiming it to be an instance of anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh’s Kishoreganj. Newschecker found that the video of shops burning in Narsingdi district in Central Bangladesh after a fire triggered by short circuit is being passed off with communal colour as an incident of arson in Kishoreganj district. No, Viral Video Does Not Show ‘Rare Sight’ Of Tirumala Tirupati Temple

A video claiming to bestow social media users with a “very rare darshan” of the famed Tirumala Tirupati temple is going viral on social media platforms. Several users shared a 2.17 minutes long clip of what appears to be the sanctum sanctorum of the hill shrine. Newschecker found the claim to be untrue. The video does not show the visuals of the temple up close, rather a replica of the same at Alipiri. Read more here.

No, ‘Condemn’ Was Not Spelt ‘Condom’ In Placards Against Imran Khan In Pakistan

Amid controversy over the remarks made by PTI chief Imran Khan against a female judge over the arrest of Shahbaaz Gil (chief of staff to Imran Khan at PTI), protests erupted across Pakistan condemning the comments made by him at a rally. Social media users are sharing an image of women Muslim League (N) assembly members holding up a placard which spelt ‘condemn’ as ‘condom’. Newschecker’s investigation reveals that the image of the placard which reads “We condom Imran Khan for threatening female judge” is altered. Read more here.

Did Dawn Attribute Massive Flooding In Pakistan To ‘People Not Reading Quran’? No, Edited Screenshot Goes Viral

Amid massive flooding in Pakistan, a screenshot of an alleged report by Dawn news is going viral on social media platforms. The alleged image claims that the Pakistani news outlet blamed floods in Pakistan on “people not reading the Quran,” while dismissing any role of climate change in the same.
