Fact
In the video, Kamal Nath can be heard saying “Atiq” in response to a question about the recent double murder in UP. This suggested that the clip was from a recent press meet.
We skimmed through videos uploaded on the official social media handles of Kamal Nath and MP Congress, and found that a longer version of the viral clip was shared on the official Facebook account of INC Madhya Pradesh on April 16, 2023.
In the longer version of the viral clip, Nath is heard saying “It’s a very unfortunate thing…these broad daylight murders that are happening today.. What do they indicate? …That what is our law and order situation? What politics is happening… in Uttar Pradesh and our country? … What does this indicate? Everyone needs to think about it…that where our country and UP are being dragged…”
He further adds that the Supreme Court should take cognisance of the matter, and order an enquiry.
On analysing the longer version of the video, we could conclude that Nath was terming the overall situation in Uttar Pradesh as “unfortunate,” and not particularly the Atiq-Ashraf killing.
Multiple news outlets reported on Kamal Nath’s remarks following Atiq Ahmed’s murder, and the BJP’s reaction on his demand of a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the gunning down of Atiq and his brother. Such reports can be seen here, here and here.
