Claim

Indian cricketer MS Dhoni gestures that he has voted for Congress in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the first phase of which ended on April 19.

The archived version of the tweet can be seen here.

Fact

Newschecker first ran a keyword search for “MS Dhoni vote Congress”, which did not throw up any credible news reports of the cricketer having voted for Congress, nor endorsing the party for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

We also learnt that polling for Ranchi, the Lok Sabha constituency where Dhoni casts his vote, is scheduled for May 25.

Newschecker then ran a reverse image search, which led us to this News18 report, dated October 5, 2020, featuring the same photo.

“Indian Premier League team Chennai Super King, which is being led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has completed six million followers on Twitter. Expressing the joy, the team shared a snap of captain cool in which he is seen showing six with his fingers,” read the report, directing us to the tweet, hailing the landmark.
