Fact
Newschecker ran a reverse image search of keyframes of the video, which led us to this ANI post on Facebook, dated October 16, 2016. “US Elections 2016: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says, “I’m a big fan of Hindus & of India; if elected as (the US) President, the Indian community will have a true friend in the White House,” read the post, sharing a clearer version of the viral video. Similar videos can be seen here and here.
We also came across this New York Times report, dated October 16, 2016, stating that Trump spoke at a benefit put on by the Republican Hindu Coalition at a convention centre in Edison, N.J, during a rare campaign stop three weeks before the then presidential election. Similar reports can be seen here and here, confirming that the viral video is from 2016.
