Several social media users are circulating a 19-second clip, purportedly of a CBS news report, on a 30-year-old American tourist being gang-raped in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, mocking India. The video is viral against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent three-day visit to the United States, where he attended the Quad Leaders’ Summit, addressed thousands of members of the Indian American community in Long Island, and spoke at the UN’s Summit of the Future.

Fact Check

Newschecker ran a keyword search for “American tourist gang-raped Manali CBS this morning”, which led us to the same report on Youtube, uploaded by CBS News on June 4, 2013.

“Indian police say an American woman was gang-raped at a resort town in Northern India while hitchhiking back to her guest house in the town of Manali. Norah O’Donnell reports,” read the description of the video.

We came across multiple news reports on the case, seen here, here and here, confirming that the incident is from June 2013.

“The 30- year-old tourist had left for Vashisht (three kilometres from Old Manali) on Monday night around 10 pm to meet her friends. She left her friend’s house at 1 am and was on the highway when the accused trucker stopped and offered her a lift. The trucker and his friends took her to a secluded spot and she was raped,” read an India Today report, dated June 8, 2013, quoting then Kullu superintendent of police Vinod K Dhawan.
