Claim

Sudha Murty, founder-chairperson of non-profit Infosys Foundation and Rajya Sabha MP, endorses an investing app.

Fact

Newschecker noticed the lip movements were not completely in sync with the audio, raising our doubts on whether it was edited. Also, a keyword search for “Sudha Murty investing app”, did not throw up any credible news reports about such an event.

We then ran a reverse image search of keyframes, which led us to this Moneycontrol (as seen in the viraclip) video on Youtube, dated July 7, 2023, headlined, “’Difficult To Live With The Most Successful…’: Sudha Murty’s Tribute To Wives Of Entrepreneurs”.

“Sudha Murty took the stage to dedicate a short but moving piece to all the wives of entrepreneurs and their unwavering support. Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty had an ode to all the wives of entrepreneurs who have stood by their husbands like a rock through their journey. After an interaction between Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy and his son Rohan Murty, where the former praised his wife for being his lifelong support, Sudha Murty took the stage to dedicate a short but moving piece to all the wives of entrepreneurs and their unwavering support,” read the description. We learnt that Murty was speaking at Moneycontrol’s Startup Conclave in Bengaluru. Murthy did not mention anything about an investing app during her address, further indicating that the viral video was digitally altered.

We then ran the video past TrueMedia, an AI content-detection tool, which found “substantial evidence of manipulation”, while also pointing towards AI-generated audio. “The transcript reads like a promotional script for a financial scheme, with exaggerated claims of high earnings and minimal effort required. The language is polished and persuasive, typical of marketing material rather than a genuine conversation or announcement. The mention of “autonomous computing mechanism” and the promise of significant financial gains with little risk are common tactics used in scams or fraudulent schemes. Additionally, the emotional appeal and urgency (“spots are limited and I recommend acting right now”) further suggest that this is a fabricated piece designed to entice potential investors,” read the tool’s report on the video.

Newschecker then ran the audio past ElevenLabs, a voice AI research and deployment company, which said it was “very likely (98% probability)” that the voice was generated with ElevenLabs.

We also ran the audio past Resemble AI’s Deepfake Detector, which stated that the voice was “Fake”, further confirming that the viral video was a deepfake.

Newschecker had earlier debunked a viral advertisement of Sudha Murty’s husband and Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy purportedly endorsing an AI trading platform, proving it to be a deepfake.
