Claim
School students hold #GetOutStalin poster, protesting against Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin.
The archived version of the post can be seen here. The purported photo went viral amid the confrontation between the ruling DMK and the BJP over the NEP-2020 and its attendant three-language policy, which saw the Dravidian major launching the ‘Get Out Modi’ campaign on social media and the saffron party countering it with the ‘Get Out Stalin’ campaign’.
Fact
Newschecker noticed that the hands of the students holding up the poster indicated AI-generated imagery, considering one hand seemed to pass through the poster while another had six fingers. AI has been notorious in rendering hands, often resulting in the fingers appearing distorted and unnatural, as seen in the viral image. We also noticed a watermark of ‘Grok’, a generative AI chatbot that can generate images based on text prompts, on the bottom-right corner of the image.
We then ran the image past Hive Moderation, an AI-image detection tool, which found it “96.8% likely to contain AI-generated or deepfake content.” Another tool, SightEngine, too, found the image to be “99% likely AI-generated.”
