The Centre set to impose GST on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000.
The archived versions of the X post and news report can be seen here and here.
Newschecker first noticed that the “report”, although stating that the final GST implementation on UPI payments is subject to an official notification by the Government of India, does not disclose the “early reports and expert predictions” that prompted the article, raising our doubts. The report carries no quotes from government officials regarding the purported proposal.
Newschecker ran a keyword search for “GST on UPI payments,” which led us to multiple news reports, seen here and here, stating that the finance ministry has issued a clarification, debunking claims that the government is considering levying GST on UPI transactions over ₹2,000
“The claims that the Government is considering levying Goods and Services Tax (GST) on UPI transactions over ₹2,000 are completely false, misleading, and without any basis. Currently, there is no such proposal before the Government. GST is levied on charges, such as the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR), relating to payments made using certain instruments,” read the Ministry of Finance’s press statement, issued by PIB on April 18, 2025.
We then ran the article past QuillBot, an AI-content detector, which stated 100% of the text is likely AI. Plagiarism detection tool Copyleaks said 98% of the text may be AI-generated, further proving that the report was not credible.
We then ran the viral article past Scam Detector, a major online tool for fraud prevention, which flagged the website as “Dubious. Very New. Suspicious’, with a low trust score of 2.8/100
.
“The Scam Detector website validator gives rajarshicollege.co.in one of the lowest trust scores on the platform: 2.8. It signals that the business could be defined by the following tags: Dubious. Very New. Suspicious. We are confident about our score as we also partner with other high-tech, fraud-prevention companies that found the same issues. So, why this low score? We came up with the 2.8 score based on 53 aggregated factors relevant to rajarshicollege.co.in’s industry. The algorithm scored this website based on issues such as its creation date and high risk of phishing, spamming, and other factors noted in the Dubious. Very New. Suspicious. tags above. Long story short, we recommend staying away from this website,” read a review of the website, adding that the domain was created less than a month ago, while details such as owner name, address have been redacted.
