Verification:

A video is doing the rounds in already flooded WhatsApp groups. It is being claimed that the lady shown in the video is the wife of Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau. In the viral video, a lady can be seen describing her improved condition because of medication and also warns to not take chances. If you watch the video, it doesn’t give you a reason to raise your eyebrow, what smells fishy here is the text message that has gone viral along with the video. The text message reads, “Have you watched this video of Canadian PM’s wife?”

Now, as we all know, the world is fighting an infodemic in the form of a pandemic and amid such a crisis, the impact one such video can have on common people is just a glimpse of how vulnerable human-lives have become because of an infodemic.

When we began our fact-checking process, we found that the viral video has made it to social media platforms along with WhatsApp groups.

The intensity of this claim on Facebook can be viewed here.

The intensity of this claim on Twitter can be viewed here.

We tried to know more about the Canadian PM’s wife. As per this Wikipedia article, her name is Sophie Grégoire Trudeau and is a former television host. And she is involved in charity work and public speaking, focusing mainly on women’s and children’s issues.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau

Sophie Grégoire ( French: [sɔfi ɡʁeɡwɑʁ]; born April 24, 1975), also known as Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, is the wife of the 23rd prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. She is a former television host and is involved in charity work and public speaking, focusing mainly on women’s and children’s issues.

While we were collecting more information about Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, we also found a BBC article which informs that she has been tested positive for novel coronavirus.

Wife of Canadian PM tests positive for coronavirus

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, wife of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, has tested positive for coronavirus after returning from a trip to London, a statement from the PM’s office says. “She will remain in isolation for the time being. She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild,” it read.

We tried matching the description of the lady in the viral video with that of Canadian PM’s wife. We found that the primary descriptions of the two do not match. We tried to collect more information about the lady featured in the viral video. When we fragmented the viral video and performed a reverse image search, we learned that the lady in the viral video is not the wife of Canada’s PM but a British national. We found a report published by the New York Post that throws more light on the viral video.

‘Like having glass in your lungs’: Mom describes having coronavirus

A British mom suffering from COVID-19 in intensive care described the deadly virus as like having “glass in your lungs” – as she urged others not to take any chances amid the pandemic.

An excerpt from the aforementioned article reads, “Tara Jane Langston, 39, a waitress, was initially diagnosed with a chest infection — but her condition worsened until she was rushed to west London’s Hillingdon Hospital, where she has been for about a week, according to Metro UK. In a WhatsApp video, she shared with colleagues — which has since circulated on Facebook and gone viral — she is shown in her hospital bed hooked up to various breathing tubes.”

We observed that the New York Post carried the aforementioned article on the basis of information published by a British daily Metro.co.uk. The article carried by Metro UK has described the whole issue in detail. As per an excerpt from the Metro UK article, “Tara Jane Langston, 39, had initially been diagnosed with a chest infection, before her condition worsened and she was rushed to Hillingdon Hospital, in west London, where she spent last week. She had been taking around eight ibuprofen tablets a day, which she says medics think could have exacerbated her symptoms. The NHS advises anyone with coronavirus to take paracetamol, but says there is currently ‘no strong evidence’ that ibuprofen will make the infection worse.”

Mum in intensive care says coronavirus is like having glass in your lungs

Tara Jane Langston, 39, was admitted to intensive care with coronavirus and warned colleagues not to take ‘any chances’ with the virus.

As we searched further, we also found a YouTube video by Guardian News which backs the articles carried by Metro UK and New York Post.

As we searched further, we found the Facebook Profile of Tara Jane Langston where her friends have wished her a speedy recovery. We also found a post on her timeline where it is claimed that the video was posted by Tara’s sister Nicole Poppy Keatley.

MISERICÓRDIA!.!.!. E ainda idiotas falando que é apenas uma gripe forte … bando de retardado .!!.!.

We then searched for the post where this video was posted by Tara’s sister. The Description of the post reads, “My sister is in her 30’s & normal health she contracted CV-19 and has been in intensive care for a while now. Please please please be careful & follow all guidelines & health measures. Just because the news is highlighting the elderly & people with underlying health issues as being a high risk that doesn’t mean if/ when you catch this your body will be able to handle/ fight it easily. Taras had BIG issues breathing & with the help of the hospital & NHS she’s back talking & can share her experience. Love you 600 Tara Jane Langston you’re so strong & doing amazing we miss you so much can’t wait to annoy you again after all this is over.”

MISERICÓRDIA!.!.!. E ainda idiotas falando que é apenas uma gripe forte … bando de retardado .!!.!.

It is evident from our fact check above that the lady in the viral video is not Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau but a British national namely Tara Jane Langston.

False Claim About People in China Not Taking Any Medicine Or Vaccine For Coronavirus Goes Viral

Contrary to the claim which says that people in China have stopped going to the hospital for cure, news report from China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency says otherwise.

Published

People in China are not killing coronavirus with heat or recovering in five days.

Claim

A social media post claims that the Chinese aren’t taking any medicine or vaccine for coronavirus. They’re instead killing the virus with heat and recovering in five days.

We received the above image on our Whatsapp verification number. The claim which is an image of a social media post allegedly posted by Tahir Mahmood Chaudry starts with a disclaimer that the message is a translation from an Indian living in Wuhan.

Using keywords we found multiple social media posts with the same claim being circulated since April, 2020. See of few examples below:

Fact Check

The claim in context was allegedly posted by Tahir Mahmood Chaudry, Executive director at Ovex Technologies. Chaudry’s social media profiles confirm his designation, but whether he posted this claim or not remains unknown. We’ve reached out to him for verification and will update the copy if we receive a response.

Moving on to the first part of the claim which says,

“Chinese are not taking any medicine or any vaccine for Corona virus. Every household has a Corona virus case. They have stopped going to hospital for cure. They instead kill the virus with heat.”

We found no credible news report or information from any official source which supports the claim that every household in China has a COVID-19 case and that they aren’t taking any medicine or vaccine for it.

Contrary to the claim which says that people in China have stopped going to the hospital for cure,  a 30 June news report from China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency states, “By Monday, the Chinese mainland had reported a total of 1,918 imported cases. Of the cases, 1,830 had been discharged after recovery, and 88 remained hospitalized. No deaths from the imported cases had been reported.”

The second part of the claim states,

“Very Hot Steam Inhalation from kettle 4 times a day

Hot Gargles 4 times a day

Hot tea 4 times a day

Virus dies in 4 days.

5th Day you are Corona Negative.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that our normal body temperature remains around 36.5 degree Celsius to 37 degree Celsius irrespective of temperature of the bath or shower. In fact baths from extremely hot water can burn us.

The WHO also also clarified that while some traditional or home remedies may provide comfort and alleviate mild COVID-19 symptoms, there is no known vaccine or medicine to prevent or cure the disease so far.

The Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in its immunity boosting guidelines recommends general measures such as drinking warm water, herbal tea, and steam inhalation among other things. But it also clearly states that this advisory is in no way a treatment for COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) in its COVID-19 guidelines also states that there is no vaccine or specific antiviral medicine to prevent or treat the novel coronavirus.

You can read our other fact checks related to the novel coronavirus here.

Conclusion

The social media post claiming that the Chinese aren’t taking any medicine or vaccine for coronavirus and other included details are false.

No, He Is Not Bharat Biotech’s VP Taking The First Dose of COVID Vaccine ‘Covaxin’

Several social users posted a picture of a woman thrusting a syringe in man’s vein and claimed that the man in the picture is Bharat Biotech’s Vice President, Dr. VK Srinivas, and the first dose of the vaccine was administered on him.

According to a report in Live Mint, Bharat Biotech, an unlisted Indian vaccine maker, has received regulatory approval to start human clinical trials for its experimental shot. The phase 1 trial of Covaxine will begin next week. The company has planned to enroll 375 people in the first phase of clinical trials.

We found that the same image is viral on Twitter and Facebook with a caption, “Dr. V. K.Srinivas, Vice President, Bharat biotech, taking Corona vaccine clinical trial immediately after taking the first dose. He is the first person in India to take vaccine developed by him and his team in Bharat Biotech. Look at the confidence.”

Fact Check

As we began fact-checking the claim, we looked for some media reports backing the claim, but we did not find any authentic information to corroborate.

However, during our research, we came across the statement tweeted by Bharat Biotech. In a statement posted on their Twitter handle, Bharat Biotech said that individual images and messages circulated on social media platforms had not disseminated by Bharat biotech. The image is a routine procedural blood draw for testing all production staff.

We now searched, if Dr.VK Srinivas is the Vice President of the Bharat biotech. During our research, we did not find any results for his name. We found that Dr. V Krishna Mohan is the Executive Director, and T Srinivas is the Chief Financial Officer of the management team of the pharmaceutical.

Conclusion

It is evident from our fact check that social media users circulated a false image claiming that the vice president of Bharat Biotech has undergone the first clinical trial of the coronavirus vaccine.
