Liz Truss won the Conservative leadership race and is set to take oath as the next UK prime minister on September 6, 2022 after defeating former UK Chancellor and Narayana Murthy’s son-in-law, Rishi Sunak. This will make her the third female PM in British political history, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
Several people took to Twitter to laud 47-year-old Truss, who trumped Sunak with 81,326 votes to 60,399 among party members, but many ended up congratulating the wrong person. Some high-profile accounts, including the prime minister of Sweden, fell for the confusion. What made the gaffe funnier, though, was the cheeky replies by the ‘wrong’ Liz Truss.
As soon as Truss’s victory was confirmed, Swedish PM Magdalena Andersson tweeted her congratulations to @liztruss, however, the Twitter handle belongs to a woman called Liz Trussell since 2009, while the new PM’s account is @trussliz. Andersson deleted her post shortly, Trussell had struck by then, tweeting that she was ready for the meet-up, and even demanding that the Swedish premier have ‘meatballs ready’.
Even a British MP, Caroline Lucas, took a political potshot at @LizTruss on Twitter, only to tag the wrong account, forcing her to apologise for the confusion later. But not before Trussell had her say.
Here’s a look at the archived versions of more of her hilarious exchanges here, here, here and here.
