Claim
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge purportedly says that if the party comes into power, it will enter your homes, break the safes, take away your wealth and redistribute it to Muslims. “People who have more kids will get more. If you don’t have kids, then what can I do?,” he says.

Fact
Newschecker ran a reverse image search of keyframes of the video, which led us to this live-streamed video of a rally addressed by Kharge in Ahmedabad on May 3, 2024, uploaded by the official YouTube channel of the Congress. The viral excerpt can be seen from the 32:28 mark in the video.
From the 31:50 mark, we can see that Kharge is speaking about the Congress manifesto, which promised a nationwide census when the party comes into power. “…We have said that the caste census should be done… We are going to conduct a caste census to see how many graduates there are, how much income there is, how much per-capita income there is.”
He then goes on to quote PM Narendra Modi’s views on the manifesto, saying, “..do you know what Modi Saheb said immediately? Congress people will enter your house, break the cupboards, take out all the money, distribute it to everyone outside, distribute it to the Muslims, those who have more children will get more.” After this, Kharge says, “but we (Congress) are not going to divide. We are not throwing anyone out like this. Sorry that Modi Saheb is spreading such ideas..,” which clearly shows that the video was misleadingly clipped.
Newschecker has already fact-checked multiple misleading claims, seen here, here and here, amid the recent political row over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s redistribution promise and the party’s manifesto, which had seen PM Modi allege that “Congress wanted to confiscate people’s wealth and redistribute it to Muslims”.
