₹ 2000 Notes Will Be Discontinued! Fake News Resurfaced on Social Media

Are the rumors of demonetization of Rs 2000 currency notes true RBI @PMOIndia? Many firms are asking their employees to not accept 2000 rupee notes and many articles are also written on the same. #demonetization 

Twitter User tags RBI, Prime Minister’s Office and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and asks if the rumors of Demonetization of Rs 2000 notes are true. The user also says, “Most of the firms are asking their employees not to accept Rs 2000 notes and there are many articles on the issue.”

Social Media is full of various predictions, studies, and reports about the Demonetization of Rs. 2000 notes. The claim has been busted by us in the past but the claim, by all means, keeps resurfacing again and again. The intensity of this claim can be seen here.

RBI denies another Demonetization

As we began fact-checking the viral claim, we found that RBI has already clarified the issue of demonetization. As per media reports, the RBI has denied banning Rs 2000 notes. An RBI spokesperson, talking to a media outlet, said, “The RBI has issued no such order and has no plan to withdraw Rs 2000 notes or print new Rs 1000 notes by January 1, 2020”. We further checked RBI’s official website in the wake of fresh rumors of demonetization but no such notice or notification was found there. We also checked RBI’s social media properties where they post regular updates but no such information could be seen in any of their updates.

What fueled the rumors?

A cropped photo of a daily newspaper is going viral on social media. Users are using this cropped photo to back their claim of demonetization. 

When we proceeded to fact check the image, a simple Google search led us to the source of the claim which is a fact check itself. A daily newspaper published a fact check on December 1, 2019, and someone intentionally cropped the photo and it went viral on Social Media.

Internal notice issued by VRL Logistics is being used to showcase how agencies are not accepting Rs 2000 notes

A claim went viral which stated that a private logistic firm named VRL Logistics has stopped accepting Rs 2000 notes. While the claim turned out to be false as the notice was issued for internal circulations and was immediately withdrawn but it did the rounds on Social Media.

Amid fresh demonetisation rumours, small firms avoiding Rs 2000 notes

Amid rumours about demonetisation of Rs 2,000 bank notes, some companies have advised their cashiers to not accept the high-value pink notes from the customers. They have also directed their accountants to deposit cash balances of Rs 2,000 notes in banks.

The inauthentic website publishes a ‘Misleading’ article to fuel the rumors of Demonetization

We further checked if there are more such claims which may fuel the ongoing chatter. We found one such article on a web portal. The headline of the article reads, “WILL HE, WON’T HE? Rumors swirl about another demonetization by PM Modi, now of Rs 2000 currency note”

While the headline itself is a product of clickbait culture, the article falsely reports many incidences that are intended to fuel the rumor and are not backed by authentic sources.
