Newschecker first ran a keyword search for “Ramban Indian Army soldiers”, which led us to reports by NDTV, CNBC-TV18, and The Hindu, stating that three soldiers were killed after an Indian Army vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a 500-metre deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on Sunday.
According to the reports, the Army truck was part of a routine convoy moving from Jammu to Srinagar along national highway-44 and that the accident occurred near Battery Chashma at around 11.30am. Ramban Senior Superintendent of Police Kulbir Singh reportedly said preliminary investigation suggested that the accident was caused by a technical glitch in the vehicle and an investigation was underway to ascertain the exact reason. “Official sources said the vehicle rolled into a deep gorge after the driver apparently lost control while negotiating a tough stretch in the Battery Chashma area on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway….,” read The Hindu report, dated May 4, 2025.
The official X account of the Northern Command, Indian Army, also posted about the accident on the platform on May 4, 2025. None of the reports nor the X post stated that it was a terrorist attack.
We then ran a reverse image search of the viral photo, purporting to be of the mangled vehicle, which led us to the same image featured in a Kashmir Observer report, dated September 27, 2023. Similar news reports from September 2023 can be seen here and here, further confirming that the viral image is not from the May 4, 2025 accident in Ramban.
According to these reports, two police personnel were killed while two more, including a teacher, were injured after a vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a gorge near a dam site at Chanderkot in Ramban district.
