Old Video of Mob Chasing Away Cops During 2020 Lockdown Falsely Linked to Murshidabad Violence

Newschecker ran a reverse image search of keyframes, which led us to a longer version of the viral video shared by news agency ANI on X on April 28, 2020, stating that it showed a crowd, which had gathered at a market place in Tikiapara of Howrah, defying the [coronavirus-enforced] lockdown, attacking police personnel and pelting stones at them when they asked the crowd to return to their homes.

Similar reports by Gujarat24 News, Hindustan Times and NDTV confirm that the viral video was from Howrah in West Bengal during the Covid lockdown in April 2020, and not from Murshidabad district, where communal violence erupted on April 11 during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. “A mob attacked policemen in West Bengal’s Howrah. The cops were trying to disperse a crowd at a market…,” read the HT report on Youtube, dated April 29, 2020, headlined, “Bengal: Mob attacks cops for trying to enforce lockdown in Covid hotspot.
