Fact Check
Was PM Modi Not Allowed On Stage During G7 Summit In Canada? Here’s What We Found

Claim
PM Modi was not given a spot on the stage during the recent G7 Summit in Canada.
Fact
Photo of G7 members shared with a misleading claim.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently participated in the international outreach programme of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on the invitation of Canadian counterpart Mark Carney. The PM’s visit comes amid sour ties between New Delhi and Ottawa following former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s allegation that Indian government agents were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Najjar.
Now, a photo-op of world leaders including US President Donald Trump, Canadian PM Mark Carney, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni among others has gone viral on social media platforms with users pointing out PM Modi’s absence from the image to claim that he was “not given a spot on the stage during the G7 Summit” and terming it to be “another diplomatic setback for India.” Newschecker, however, found the claim to be misleading.

Fact Check/Verification
A reverse image search on the viral photo led us to the media section of the official website of G7 2025 Summit. It featured photographs of the same world leaders at the identical location as seen in the viral image as “G7 leaders’ family photo.”

The multimedia gallery also shared the photographs from the “G7 working session: Global economic outlook” showing the same world leaders as seen in the viral photo.
The G7 is made up of 7 member countries – France, the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada – and the European Union, which is represented by the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission at the Summit. The viral image only included the heads of the G7 members.

Notably, India is not a part of the G7 but was invited to the Summit as a part of its “international outreach” programme. Besides India, Canada also invited Australia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Ukraine among others to the 2025 G7 Summit.

The Prime Minister shared a photo of himself with other world leaders at the G7 Summit in Canada on his X account. The same was shared by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, on June 18, 2025, stating, “A collective commitment to addressing global challenges & promoting common values. PM Narendra Modi with the leaders of G7 countries and invited partners.”

PM Narendra Modi also addressed the recent G7 Outreach Session in Canada.
Senior journalist Sidhant Sibal further clarified that as per the tradition “G7 has 2 formats.” “Day 1: Leaders (Members) meet photo. Day 2: Leaders (members) + invited leaders photo,” he said in an X post, dated June 18, 2025, and shared photographs from the same.

We noticed that the photo session had been arranged in similar format even in the previous years. Similar images were taken during the 2024 G7 Summit in Italy, 2023 G7 Summit in Japan, 2022 G7 Summit in Germany.

Old Video Shared To Claim India Media Was Not Allowed At G7 Summit In Canada
Adding to the narrative that India was snubbed at the summit, a video allegedly showing PM Modi asking reporters if they were not allowed inside the summit venue, has gone viral online, with users claiming that Canada did not allow the Indian media to cover the G7 Summit.

Newschecker’s investigation, however, revealed that the video was actually from Germany and has been shared in a false context.

On carefully analysing the clip, we noticed “sdamer platz” written on a gate behind the Prime Minister.

Taking a clue, we looked up “sdamer platz” and “PM Modi” on Google which led us to multiple reports from May 2022 on Prime Minister’s address to the Indian diaspora at a theatre at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany. Such reports can be seen here, here and here.
The event was live streamed on Narendra Modi’s official YouTube channel on May 2, 2022, and showed him in the same attire as in the viral clip.
Further, we found that the viral clip was shared by multiple news outlets in 2022, such as this, this, during the Prime Minister’s Berlin visit.

Notably, multiple visuals from PM Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit in Canada have been credited to ANI/DD, both Indian outlets.
Hence, we find the claim to be false.
Honour To Host You: Canadian PM Tells Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney on the sidelines of the recent G7 summit. During the same, the Canadian leader said that it was a “great honour” to host PM Modi at the Summit.
He added that India has been participating in the G7 Summits since 2018, and it is a testament to the “importance of your country, to your leadership, and to the importance of the issues that we look to tackle together, from energy security, from the energy transition that you’re hoping to lead, to the future of artificial intelligence, to the fight that we have against transnational repression, against terrorism, against other factors, and the work that we can do together…”

India and Canada have agreed to restore high commissioners in Delhi and Ottawa and discuss restarting talks for a trade agreement, visa services and other dialogue mechanisms.
Conclusion
It can thus be concluded that the viral claim of PM Modi not being allowed on stage during the G7 Summit in Canada is misleading. The viral photo actually shows only the leaders from G7 members.
