Claim

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar criticising the BCCI for its “mismanagement” of the ongoing ICC 2023 World Cup.

Fact

Newschecker first ran a keyword search for “Sunil Gavaskar BCC criticism World Cup”, which did not throw up any credible news reports of such a statement by the former cricketer.

We then looked up Gavaskar’s most recent video for Star Sports amid the World Cup, seen here, where we saw that he had made no such statement.

A further search led us to a tweet by Aaj Tak/Sports Tak managing editor Vikrant Gupta, who said the quote was fake. A similar tweet by senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai can be seen here, confirming that the viral quote is fake.

Newschecker had debunked a similar fabricated quote attributed to Gavaskar during the Asia Cup last month, purportedly criticising the BCCI after an India-Pakistan match was abandoned.
