Fact

We looked up the viral photograph on Google lens and found a photo gallery by Times Of India, dated November 13, 2009. It featured a similar picture of Indira Gandhi standing alongside Sonia Gandhi and an infant Rahul Gandhi.

On comparing the two visuals, we could conclude that the viral image has been cropped out from the photograph featured on the TOI website

(L-R) Viral image and image featured in TOI website

Further, on analyzing the full-length version of the viral photograph we could conclude that the scarf seen wrapped around Gandhi’s head is not a hijab, but part of her saree’s pallu (loose end). Additionally, she is seen wearing what appears to be a waist-length jacket/overcoat on her saree and not a burqa.

Image featured in TOI report

We found several images of Gandhi in which she can be seen wrapping the pallu of her saree around her head, as seen in the viral photograph. Such images can be seen here, here, here, and here

Hence, we could conclude that a cropped version of the photograph is being shared to falsely show Indira Gandhi wearing a hijab and burqa.

Result: False
