Amid the ban on fireworks on the occasion of Diwali, many social media users are sharing a video of fireworks going off in a night sky, claiming it to show recent Diwali celebrations in Delhi. Newschecker found these claims to be untrue.

Among the users who shared the video on Facebook was user ‘Vishnu Adhiyogi’ along with the caption Happy Diwali MiLords……….Well done Delhi’.

Using this as a clue we conducted a keyword search with the words ‘Naples’, ‘Italy’, ‘fireworks’, ‘New years eve’ and found a tweet shared by user ‘@niporwifi’ shared on 1st January, 2022 along with the caption “New Year in Naples. In theory, they fine 500 € whoever throws firecrackers.” The tweet contained the same video which is viral now.

Newschecker also found a Youtube video uploaded on the official channel of Turning Point USA on 1st January, 2022. Parts of the viral video can be found in this video. According to the video, the incident is from Naples, Italy where residents burst firecrackers after a ban was imposed due to covid.

We also found a report by Belgian media website Lavenir on January 3, 2022 which contained a screengrab of the video video. The report stated “Despite the ban issued this year by the mayor, Gaetano Manfredi, the Neapolitans have not given up on the traditional end-of-year fireworks display.”
