Claim

An infographic in a Hindi newspaper showing that four high-profile candidates lost by the same margin of 19,731 votes, which proves that the EVMs were tampered during the recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The archived version of the tweet can be seen here.

Fact

Newschecker went to the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s website to check the results of the four Lok Sabha constituencies mentioned in the newspaper clipping, which purportedly saw four big candidates losing by the same margin (19,731 votes).

  • Navneet Rana, BJP, Amravati (Maharashtra)
  • Ajay Teni, BJP, Kheri (Uttar Pradesh)
  • Madhavi Latha, BJP, Hyderabad (Telangana)
  • Kanhaiya Kumar, Congress (North-East Delhi)

Newschecker found that Rana did lose to Congress’s Balwant Baswant Wankhade by 19,731 votes.

But Teni lost to Samajwadi Party’s Utkarsh Verma ‘Madhur’ by 34,329 votes, contradicting the viral claim.

Meanwhile, Latha lost to AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi by 3,38,087 votes, contradicting the viral claim.

Kanhaiya Kumar lost to BJP’s Manoj Tiwari by 1,38,778 votes, again, contradicting the viral claim.

We can clearly see that the four candidates lost by varying margins, confirming that the viral newspaper clipping had inaccurate figures. A further search led us to the source of the viral graphic, which was the front page of the June 5, 2024 edition of the Rajasthan Patrika.

We can see the correct ECI figures were published by the newspaper, which suggests that the viral image of the newspaper graphic was most likely edited.
