An image purportedly showing Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer smiling and posing for a photo while sitting on a hospital bed has gone viral on social media, with several users linking it to his recent hospitalisation following an injury during the India–Australia match in Sydney.
However, Newschecker found that the image is old and unrelated to his current injury.

According to a statement issued by the BCCI, Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for further medical evaluation. The board confirmed that scans revealed a laceration injury to his spleen. Iyer is currently under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.
🔹 A Google Lens search traced the viral photograph to a report by ANI, dated April 8, 2021, which carried the same image. The report quoted Iyer confirming a successful shoulder surgery after being injured during the India–England ODI series.
🔹The cricketer had shared the image on his social media handles on April 8, 2021, writing, “Surgery was a success and with lion-hearted determination, I’ll be back in no time. Thank you for your wishes.”

🔹Several media organisations (seen here, here and here) had published the same update in April 2021, confirming that Iyer’s hospital photo was from his shoulder surgery, not a recent incident.
During a press meet on Tuesday, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav said that after learning about Shreyas Iyer’s injury, Yadav reached out to the team physio, Kamlesh, who told him that Iyer was stable.
“On the first day, you cannot be sure of anything. But we have been talking to him for two days now. He has been replying. If he is replying on the phone, it means he is stable. And the doctor is also there with him. But he will be under supervision for the next few days,” he added. Some recent media reports (seen here, here and here) have stated that Iyer has been moved out of the ICU and that his health remains delicate but stable
