Claim

Hindutva is a card used by the BJP for electoral gains, says PM Narendra Modi in an old interview.

The archived version of the tweet can be seen here.

Fact

Newschecker ran a keyword search for “Hindutva Modi election card BJP”, which led us to this Zee News report, dated September 17, 2022, sharing a 26-year-old Zee News interview with Narendra Modi on the occasion of the PM’s 72nd birthday.

We also found the same interview uploaded on Youtube by Zee News on September 17, 2022, stating that it is from 1998. The viral excerpt can be seen from the 10:27 mark, where PM Modi is clearly heard saying, “Hindutva, yeh chunavi khel khelnekeliye ek tash ka patta nahi hai (Hindutva is not a card to play the election game),” contradicting the viral claim. We can see that the word “nahi” has been removed, confirming that the viral video had been digitally altered.
