Fact
Newshecker first noticed the advertisement for Samsung LCD TV, which suggests that the picture was of an earlier event.
A reverse image search of the photo led us to this tweet, dated November 26, 2017, sharing the same photo. “The Great Ethiopian Run – 2017 – Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia! Beautiful Scenes!,” read the post.
We then came across this CNN article, dated August 4, 2017, featuring a similar photo of the run. The caption of the photo read, “The annual Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa is popular among tourists”, crediting it to the Ethiopia Tourism Organization.
A further search led us to a clearer version of the viral image from UN’s MDG Achievement Fund website, with the headline “Haile Gebreselassie kicks off the Great Ethiopian Run under the slogan ‘We Can End Poverty by 2015’”.
A relevant keyword led us to multiple write-ups, seen here and here, on the website, along with a video that confirmed the viral image was from “The Great Ethiopian Run”, which was held in 2010 with the support of MDG achievement fund.
