Following India’s thrilling last-ball victory over Pakistan in a group-stage clash at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Melbourne on Sunday, a quote attributed to former England captain Nasser Hussain is doing the rounds on social media. “The umpires made some weird decision in favour of India today but maybe we should keep quiet and not upset ICC and BCCI,” the viral tweets and FB posts claim Hussain as saying post the nail-biting final over of the game that involved a few crucial umpiring decisions.

Hussain is part of the star-studded commentary panel that will provide their expert opinions during the event in Australia from October 16 to November 13.

Fact check

Newschecker first ran a keyword search for the terms “Nasser Hussain India-Pak umpire”, which did not throw up any relevant reports or records of such a statement during or after the match.

However, what we did find though was Hussain himself debunking the viral quote on Twitter after it was posted by a Pakistan fan. “Probably best if you can delete this, please .. it’s fake news and a fake quote and definitely not what a great game of cricket like todays deserves !! Thanks,” tweeted Hussain.

We also came across multiple news reports on the Twitter exchange by media outlets such as the Hindustan Times, News18, NDTV, confirming that the viral quote was fake.

Conclusion

Viral posts claiming former England captain Nasser Hussain threw doubts on the umpiring after India’s thrilling win over Pakistan at the T20 World Cup were found to be false.

Result: False
