AI/Deepfake
Old footage of Jawaharlal Nehru predicting communally divisive politics in India.
The viral video does not show a real speech by Jawaharlal Nehru. Expert analysis confirms that the audio in the video was generated using AI and does not belong to Nehru.
A 10-second video allegedly showing India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, saying, “Take care of this country, otherwise in 75 years someone will divide it in the name of religion,” has gone viral on social media platforms. Newschecker investigation revealed it to be a deepfake, and not an actual statement by Nehru.

A keyword search for “Nehru 75 years religion statement” and “Jawaharlal Nehru take care of country quote” did not yield any credible results — media reports, government archives, historical documentation — supporting the viral claim.
On carefully analysing the viral clip, we noticed that Nehru’s lip movements appeared forced, and unnatural. Suspecting AI manipulation, we ran the audio past an AI audio detection tool Resemble.ai, which found it to be fake.
The Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU) of the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA), of which Newschecker is a part, also ran the viral audio through several AI detection platforms. They ran it on Aurigin.ai, a Swiss deep-tech company with an advanced audio deepfake detection engine, which concluded that the entire audio track was AI generated.
The DAU also checked the audio on Hiya which found the voice to be AI-generated or modified, with only 1% match with live human markers.
