Claim

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy promotes an AI trading platform.

We received this claim on our Whatsapp tipline (9999499044), requesting us to fact-check it.

Fact

Newschecker noticed that the lip movements of Narayana Murthy in the viral clip did not completely sync with the audio as well as seeming unnatural, raising doubts on whether it was digitally manipulated.  Also, we ran a keyword search for “India Today Narayana Murthy interview trading platform”, which did not lead us to any credible news reports about such an interview.

We, however, came across multiple news reports from December 23, 2023, seen here, here and here, stating that Murthy had flagged viral deepfake videos of him endorsing and investing in automated trading applications. Murthy denied any involvement in endorsing such platforms and urged people to not believe in the deepfake videos, according to the reports, which directed us to Murthy’s tweets, dated December 14, 2023.

We then ran a reverse image search of keyframes of the viral ad, which led us to this Youtube video, uploaded by CNBC-TV18 on December 14, 2022. “The founders of Infosys gather in B’luru to mark 40 yrs since the inception of India’s OG startup. Shereen Bhan speaks with Narayana Murthy, who along with 5 others, started the company in 1982 after borrowing ₹10,000 from his wife Sudha Murthy,” read the description of the video.

The viral excerpt can be seen from the 01:15 mark to the 02:00 mark, where Murthy is clearly heard talking about how the company was formed. At no point in the interview did he endorse a trading platform, which proves that the viral video was edited.

We also ran the audio past Resemble AI’s Deepfake Detector, which stated that the voice was “Fake”, further confirming that the viral video was a deepfake.
