Fact

Newschecker ran a reverse image search, which led us to this tweet from journalist Mayukh Ranjan Ghosh, dated January 11, 2020, stating that it was from a street in Kolkata’s Esplanade area. A further search led us to a Times of India report, dated January 13, 2020, sharing a photo of the graffiti, taken from another angle, stating that it was painted during a protest against CAA and NRC in Kolkata, amid a visit by PM Narendra Modi.

“The epicentre of protest against CAA and NRC shifted from Esplanade to Park Circus on Sunday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took an aerial route over the city and flew out of the Kolkata airport around 12.30pm on Sunday. However, even though the protesters were gone, they left behind a number of messages painted with permanent street paint and white cement on the city’s most popular square,” read the report.

We noticed that the sign on the building in the image read, “Metro Channel Control Post”, following we looked up the corresponding area on Google Maps.

A comparison with the Google Maps image (left) further confirms that the viral image (right)  is from Esplanade, Kolkata and not Tamil Nadu.
