Viral Video Does Not Show Zakir Hussain Performing With Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Tabla player Tari Khan wrongly identified as Zakir Hussain.

Legendary tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away in a San Francisco hospital due to complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis on Monday, his family confirmed. Unverified reports about his demise first surfaced on Sunday, but were later refuted by his sister Khursheed.

As tributes and condolences poured in for the legendary musician, several social media users are also sharing a video purportedly showing Ustad Zakir Hussain performing with iconic singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Multiple X and Facebook users shared the 28-second-long-clip claiming to show Zakir Hussain and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sharing a stage. The video has also found its way to YouTube. Newschecker, however, found the claim to be untrue.

Fact Check/Verification

A Google lens search on the keyframes of the viral video led us to an article, published in website ‘Nusrat Online Blog’,  titled ‘Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Ustad Tari Khan” a few awesome Jugalbandi ” Part 1.’ It featured an image similar to the visuals seen in the viral clip, and stated “What we present today is some of the awesome Jugalbandis between NFAK (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) & Tari Khan during 1992-1994 in the USA .”

We also found a YouTube video by @DESIblitz, dated February 17, 2017, featuring an “exclusive interview” of  “Tabla maestro Ustad Abdul Sattar Tari Khan.” The video featured multiple snippets from on-stage Tari Khan’s performances, including the one with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in a backdrop identical to one seen in the viral clip.

A longer-coloured version of the video has been shared multiple times across digital platforms to show legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s concert with Tari Khan. In one such video posted by Facebook page @musicalseton on August 30, 2019, the viral clip can be seen around 4:50 minutes.

At the beginning of the video, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is heard introducing the man, who is being widely identified as Ustad Zakir Hussain, as “Mr Abdul Sattar Tari.” Abdul Sattar Khan, popularly known as Ustad Tari Khan, is a Pakistani tabla player and vocalist. We were not independently able to ascertain other details about the performance.

Conclusion

Hence, viral posts alleging to show table maestro Zakir Hussain performing with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan are false.
