Claim
Video shows carcesses of cattle slaughtered during the recent Eid celebrations in West Bengal.

Fact
At least one-year-old video from Bangladesh’s Dhaka.

A video of cattle carcasses lying on a pathway covered with what appears to be blood mixed with water, with people roaming around is going viral on social media platforms. Several users, including verified handles, shared the video claiming to show the recent Eid celebrations in West Bengal. However, Newschecker found that the video is at least one-year-old, and shows visuals from Bangladesh.

Multiple social media users shared the 1:21 minute video claiming to show Eid celebrations in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal. Some even claimed that 200 cows were slaughtered in a residential complex in the state.

Fact Check/Verification

We skimmed through the comment sections of the post carrying the viral footage, and found multiple users pointing out that the video is in fact from Bangladesh, and not West Bengal.

Further, on carefully analysing the viral footage we spotted the watermark of “@AshwiniSahaya” in the middle of the screen.

Taking a clue, we scanned through the X handle of Ashwini Shrivastava (@AshwiniSahaya), and found that the same video was uploaded on his account on July 1, 2023. “Hindus Celebrating Holi in India ( festival of colour)? No, This visual is from a housing society in Dhaka, Bangladesh Eid al-Adha / Bakrid 2023,” the post stated.

Following this, we looked up keywords  “residential apartments/flats/housing building in Dhaka” on YouTube, and found a video by Kazi Muneem Rahman. Featuring a partially complete building complex, it detailed the Shopnonagar Residential Flat Project at Section 9, Dhaka’s Mirpur.

On comparing the construction featured in the YouTube video with the taller building seen in the viral footage, we found several similarities. The same can be seen below.

We also found a YouTube video by Amar Chokh, dated October 24, 2022, carrying what appears to be an animated aerial view of Swpnanagar (pronounced ‘Shopnonagar’ in Bengali) Residential Flat Project in Dhaka’s Mirpur.

The video, too, featured a building complex similar to the one seen in the widely circulated footage allegedly showing visuals from West Bengal.

Following this, we looked up “Shopnonagar Residential Flat Project at Section 9, Dhaka’s Mirpur” on Google Earth View, and were able to spot the exact location seen in the viral video.

Google Images for “Shopnonagar Residential Flat” also showed the same building complex as seen in the widely circulated video.

We were not independently able to verify the number, and identify the cattle carcasses seen in the video. However, the above mentioned evidence proves that it’s from Bangladesh and not Bengal.
