Claim: The scholarship provided by Malabar Gold is for Muslim students only.
Fact: Scholarships were given to all category students.

A post is going viral claiming that the scholarship given by Malabar Gold is only for Muslim students. Malabar Gold and Diamonds is an Indian jewellery group headquartered in Kozhikode, Kerala. The posts made ahead of the Akshaya Tritiya which falls on May 10, advices ‘true Hindus” against buying gold from Malabar gold.

“What makes Malabar gold give scholarships only to students belonging to one particular community? If true, Hindus must refrain from giving any business to Malabar Gold and Diamonds. Akshaya Trithiya is coming, hit them where it pains them hard,” the viral message  reads on X.

Fact Check/Verification

On a keyword search using the phrase, ‘Malabar Gold Scholarships’.we found a video posted by the YouTube channel ‘Malabar Gold and Diamonds,’ on January 21, 2023. The video description says, Educational Scholarship Program | CSR Initiative | Malabar Group.

 The viral image can be seen in the video. The video mentions that the location is Mangaluru and the number of students is 630.

Another picture displayed in the viral post shows a group of girls not wearing hijab. Both images come at 1.03 minutes of the 3.11-minute YouTube video.

At 0.16 minutes of the same video, it says that the beneficiaries include students belonging to families from all sections of society “irrespective of caste or community.” The video also says that only girls will be considered for the scholarship.

Malabar Charitable Trust, in their ‘About Us’ section on its website states that the objective of the trust include to foster and educate orphans and destitute without any discrimination of caste and creed, to provide financial assistance by way of grant, aid and scholarships to the poor and deserving students for proceeding with their studies,

We spoke to the office of Malabar Charitable Trust which informed us that the viral claim is false. We provide scholarships to eligible students irrespective of their caste and religion.

Conclusion

Our investigation revealed that Malabar Charitable Trust does not award scholarships to students based on caste and religion. So, the viral claim is false.
