Audio found to be digitally overlaid on a performance of ‘Geet Gawai’.

A video allegedly showing a group performing a song highlighting inflation in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gone viral on social media platforms, with users alleging it to be from his recent two-day visit to Mauritius

Multiple social media users shared the 30-second-long-video claiming that the Prime Minister was greeted with a performance criticising price rise in Mauritius. The video allegedly shows the performers singing the ‘Mehngai Dayain’ song from the 2010 Bollywood movie ‘Peepli Live’. Newschecker, however, found the media to be altered.

Fact Check/Verification

A Google keyword search for “PM Modi”, “Mauritius”, “inflation” and “song” did not yield any credible reports on any such song about price rise being performed during the Prime Minister’s visit.

We, however, found multiple reports stating that the Indian diaspora welcomed PM Modi with a traditional Bihari performance of ‘Geet Gawai’ during his visit to Mauritius. The same can be seen here, here and here

The videos of the performance were shared on the official YouTube channels of PMO India and MyGov India on March 11, 2025. These videos showed the Prime Minister in the same location, and featured the same performers as seen in the viral video. However, the performers were not singing any song highlighting the inflation.

Further, we also found a video on Narendra Modi’s official YouTube channel showing snippets from his Mauritius visit. Around 1:21 minutes into the video, we found the same visuals of the Prime Minister watching the Geet Gawai performance as seen in the viral video.

Following a frame-by-frame comparison between the viral clip and a snippet of the performance featured in Narendra Modi’s YouTube video, we found the visuals to be the same. The last few frames of the performance’s clip in YouTube video by Narendra Modi have been placed in the beginning of the viral clip.

The audio of the clips were different. We could conclude that a different audio -a song highlighting inflation- has been digitally overlaid on the original clip of Geet Gawai performance.

The original clip can also be shared in an X post by Sansad TV on March 11, 2025.

Other videos of the performance were also shared on the official YouTube channel of Narendra Modi on March 11, 2025, stating “Geet Gawain is a traditional Bhojpuri musical ensemble that embodies the rich cultural heritage brought to Mauritius by women from the Bhojpuri belt of India.”

Adding, “In recognition of its cultural significance, Geet Gawai was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2016.”

Further, we also spotted the watermark of “Netaflix” on the top right corner in the viral clip.
