Weekly Wrap: Misinformation Around 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, False Claims On Cristiano Ronaldo & More

While “All eyes on Rafah” trend dominated social media platforms this week, politically-charged content around the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls also gained traction online.  And, as expected, misinformation followed. A 2019 video of voting fraud was linked to the ongoing General Elections, and social media users falsely claim that PM Modi shared the “All eyes on PoK” image on his Instagram account. From false claims on footballer Cristiano Ronaldo to deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna, here are our top fact checks from the week:

2024 Lok Sabha Polls

Old Video Of Voting Fraud From 2019 General Elections Falsely Linked To 2024 Polls

A video showing an incident of voting fraud where the polling agent is seen casting votes on behalf of three women is being widely shared online amid the Lok Sabha Polls. However, Newschecker found that the video dates back to 2019, and shows an incident from a booth in Faridabad. The viral video is not related to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Read more here.

Did PM Share ‘All Eyes On PoK’ On His Instagram Story? No, Viral Screenshot Is Fake

An alleged screengrab of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Instagram story stating “All Eyes on PoK” has gone viral online. However, Newschecker found that the image is fabricated, and that there is no evidence to show that the Prime Minister had posted any such story on his Instagram account. Read more here.

Viral Video Of Cristiano Ronaldo Voicing Support For ‘Children Of Gaza’ Is Digitally Altered

Several social media users are circulating a 24-second video message, purportedly showing Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo voicing his support for the “children of Gaza.” However, Newschecker found that the viral video of Cristiano Ronaldo extending support to the children of Gaza has been manipulated using AI. Centre Providing Free Wi-Fi At Your Homes? No, Viral Claim Is False

A video claiming that the Central government is providing free Wi-Fi at your homes through a ‘Know your ISP’ facility on its website has gone viral on social media. However, Newschecker found that the claim is fabricated. Government’s PIB Fact Check clarified,” The ‘Know your ISP’ facility in Sanchar Saathi only facilitates citizens to check the details of Internet Service Providers”. Read more here.

Deepfake Video Of Rashmika Mandanna In Bikini Goes Viral

A video  allegedly showing actor Rashmika Mandanna in a red bikini, posing near a waterfall is going viral on social media. Newschecker noticed that at several moments in the video, the woman’s movements seemed unnatural and jerky, especially around the eyes, which indicates signs of digital manipulation. Read more here
