From misinformation around the catastrophic crash of Air India flight 171 in Ahmedabad, to phishing attempts by fraudsters impersonating prominent personalities and brands, here are our top fact-checks from this week.
Several social media users shared an image, claiming that it was the last photo of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed on the London-bound Air India flight that crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Newschecker found that the image is from 2021.
An alleged Times Of India report detailing a “revolutionary technology” that “will allow you to earn over Rs1,950,000 a month with government support” had grabbed attention online, stating that finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had developed an innovative platform in collaboration with Narayana Murthy. Newschecker found that the article, which used deepfake videos, was fabricated, and hosted on a suspicious website intended to steal personal information.
A purported Facebook live stream went viral with the claim that it captured the exact moment before the Air India aircraft crashed in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. Newschecker found that it was an old video from Nepal when a passenger captured the exact moment of the fatal incident on Facebook Live.
Several social media users shared viral posts, claiming that RCB was offering ₹5,000 giveaways to fans upon clicking an external link or scratching a virtual card, after they won their maiden IPL title on June 3, 2025. Newschecker found that the links were dubious, created by scammers to steal your personal data, money, or even gain access to your accounts. Similarly, Newschecker debunked posts claiming that the Narendra Modi-led Central government was offering ₹5,000 cash rewards to citizens, purportedly in association with UPI apps.
A video allegedly showing US President Donald Trump announcing a ban on the production of Tesla vehicles in the country went viral on social media platforms amid his ongoing rift with Elon Musk. Newschecker found that there was no such announcement by the US President so far and that the video was manipulated using AI.
