Weekly Wrap: Misinformation Around BRICS Summit, Maharashtra Polls And More

From misinformation around the recently concluded BRICS summit in Russia, where Indian PM Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with host President Putin and China’s Xi Jinping, to a video claiming to show Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge being made to wait outside the room when Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was filing her nomination papers, here are our top fact-checks from the week.

A 48-second video clip, purportedly showing Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge waiting outside a room, went viral across social media platforms on October 23, 2024, claiming that it was taken on Wednesday when Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was filing the nomination papers for her maiden electoral battle from Wayanad for the Lok Sabha by-poll. Newschecker found that the viral video was clipped and shared out of context. Photos and video showed the Congress president sitting right next to Priyanka Gandhi when she was filing her nomination papers.

New BRICS Currency To Replace US Dollar? No, Here’s The Truth Behind Viral Claim
Several social media users, including verified handles, claimed that a new single currency for the BRICS nation was unveiled at the bloc’s summit that was held from October 22 to 24 in Kazan under Russian chairmanship. Users who shared the post even “vouched” that the new “BRICS currency” is set to “replace the US Dollar.” Newschecker found no official record of any such “unveiling” and that a commemorative note presented to Putin was shared in false context.

Viral Video Does Not Show Baba Siddique’s Shooter Justifying His Assassination
A video showing a man, surrounded by police personnel, interacting with media and rebuking NCP leader Baba Siddique, who was shot dead in Mumbai on October 12 allegedly at the behest of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, went viral on social media platforms. Those sharing the video claimed that the man was one of the shooters who opened fire at Siqquide. Newschecker found that while the man seen in the video is known to have links with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, however, he is not an accused in the Baba Siddique murder case. He was arrested for a murder of a gym owner in Delhi.

Rape Survivor Flogged In Public Under Sharia Law? No, 2018 Video From UP Viral With False Communal Spin
A disturbing 1-minute 3-second video, purportedly showing a woman bound to a tree and being flogged in public, went viral across social media platforms with the claim that she was being punished for being a rape survivor, as under Sharia (Islamic) law, “if a woman is raped, it’s considered sex outside of marriage, and she is to be punished”.  Newschecker found that the video dated back to March 2018 and showed a woman tied up to a tree and thrashed on the panchayat’s order in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, because she was suspected of having an affair.

2021 Video Falsely Linked to ₹5 Crore Seizure in Pune Ahead of Maharashtra Elections
Several social media users, including verified profiles, shared a video showing stacks of currency notes, claiming to show the money recovered from an associate of an MLA of the ruling Shiv Sena in poll-bound Maharashtra. The assembly election in the state is scheduled to be held on November 20. Newschecker, however, found that the video dated back to at least June 2021.
