Film-maker Anubhav Sinha’s Netflix series, ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’, based on the hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight on December 24, 1999, after the plane took off from Kathmandu, Nepal, triggered controversy online shortly after it premiered on August 29, for allegedly changing the names of two of the hijackers to Hindu names. Newschecker found that the creators did not deliberately change names, but showed the actual aliases used by the hijackers.

A video purportedly showing an analysis of the various promises, allegedly made by the Congress party in their manifesto for the upcoming Assembly elections in J&K, is going viral on social media. Users sharing the video criticised the party for its purported promise to bring back Article 370 if elected to power. Newschecker found that the video did not discuss the Congress manifesto for J&K, as the party is yet to release it.

However, while there were reports of the accused being welcomed with garlands, Newschecker found that the viral image is in fact old, and shows one of the three accused, who is yet to be released from jail.

Viral Video Does Not Show Accused Who Threw Cow Tail Outside Bhilwara Temple, Old Clip From UP Shared With False Context
A cow tail was reportedly found outside a temple in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara, triggering communal tension in the city last week. A purported video of police personnel brutally thrashing a group of men went viral on social media platforms with users claiming that it showed the Rajasthan Police’s action on the accused in the Bhilwara case. Newschecker found that the video dates back to 2022, and from UP’s Saharanpur, which has been shared with false context.
