Do You Know in #Delhi Election, BJP lost elections by less than 100 votes on 8 Seats; 1,000 votes on 19 Seats; 2,000 votes on 9 Seats. Add this to the seats won: 8; It comes to 44 seats and 3 percent more voting could have changed the entire game.

 

 

 

Verification

 

A message is going viral on social media which claims that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost Delhi assembly elections on 8 seats by less than 100 votes: 8 Seats; less than 1,000 votes on 19 Seats; less than 2,000 votes on 9 Seats and if we add these seats to current tally, BJP had won 44 seats.  

 

 

We found that several users on Twitter and Facebook shared the viral message on their respective handles. Notably, we found that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Kanpur, Satyadev Pachauri also shared the same viral message on his official Twitter handle.

 

 

 

As we began our fact check, we found many social media users calling out Satyadev Pachauri for sharing false figures.After being called out by social media users ,he deleted his tweet.

 

With the help of relevant keywords search, we fact-cecked the claim shared by Kanpur’s BJP MP on the official website of Election Commission of India (ECI). During our search, we found that the smallest margin victory was secured by an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate,  Bhupinder Singh Joon, who retained the seat for his party by getting 57,271 votes with a narrow margin of just 753 votes. Bhupinder Joon defeated his rival BJP candidate Sat Prakash Rana who secured 56,518 votes.The Second-lowest margin was registered in Laxmi Nagar constituency by BJP’s Abhay Verma who won by a margin of 880 votes.

 

 

 

During our fact check, we found a detailed report on constituency wise winners and their respective victory margins. When we further searched, we found that the Aam Aadmi Party managed to win 10 seats by a margin of 1,000 to 10,000 votes while it won 23 seats by a margin of 10,000 to 20,000 votes, it managed to win 24 seats by a margin of 20,000 to 50,000 votes while it won 3 seats by a margin of more than 50,000 votes wherein the margin of votes for one seat crossed the 75,000 vote mark.

 

 

Delhi elections: AAP’s victory margins show that it wasn’t a close contest

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) registered a landslide victory once again in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly polls with the party winning 62 seats in the 70-member assembly while its rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) settling on 8 seats, and Congress drawing a blank yet again.
