We began our fact checking by first observing details in the said video. At the 7-second mark, we noticed “Madhwapur” written on the wall. On performing a keyword search on Google we found that Madhwapur is a Tehsil, an administrative division of the local government in the Madhubani District of Bihar.

Using relevant keywords, we searched for media reports carrying out details regarding the incident. We found a media report published by a local media outlet, First Bihar. We also found the same video uploaded on their YouTube channel.

According to this report, around 25 migrant labourers are in quarantine at a middle school in Madhwapur. It states that on Monday afternoon, a cook served food and placed it on a  bench. However, some of the migrant labourers demanded to be served food without maintaining social distancing. This was refused by the cooks, after which the migrants allegedly created ruckus and started throwing away food, states the report.

We found that the media outlets did not mention any casteist angle to the incident in their reports.

Dismissing the claims made with the viral video, he said, “There is no casteist angle to the incident. Some of the migrant labourers demanded to be served food in a proper way and without maintaining a social distance. The cooks denied their demand and on which they created ruckus at quarantine center. An FIR has been registered in the case”. Here is the audio of our conversation with the Station House Officer (SHO) at Saharghat.shaminder · WhatsApp Audio 2020 – 05 – 22 At 2.43.20 PM (online – Audio – Converter.com)
