Fact
A Google reverse image search on the keyframes of the viral video led us to a Facebook post by @uniladmag, dated March 22, 2023. It featured the viral footage with the caption, “ I’m so glad they’re extinct.” The text overlay in the video read, “ What a megalodon attack would actually look like. This scarily realistic VFX is demonstrating how a real megalodon attack would go down.”
Furthermore, the video was uploaded on the Instagram page of a digital creator, @aleksey__n, on March 9, 2023, with the caption, “Meg🦈 #reels #meg #megalodon #animation”
We found several animated/VFX videos on the Instagram account of @aleksey__n.
Multiple news outlets reported on this “animation “ video of the extinct megalodon shark attacking a ship. Such reports can be seen here, here and here.
Hence, the viral posts claiming to show a giant fish attacking a ship off the Canadian coast are false. The video is a result of animation, and does not show any actual incident.
Result: False
