Viral Photo Claiming To Show Canadian PM & Tom Hanks On Epstein Island Is AI-Generated

Claim

Canadian PM Mark Carney photographed with Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted of aiding sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and actor Tom Hanks, on the infamous Epstein island.

Fact

Newschecker found an earlier version of the photo uploaded on X on February 14, 2025, where you can clearly see the watermark of generative AI chatbot Grok on the bottom-right corner, suggesting that the image was AI-generated. Also, the overly glossy texture and the blurred background point towards the image being AI-generated.

We then ran the image past Hive Moderation, an AI image detection tool, which found the image 99.2% likely to contain AI-generated or deepfake content. Another tool, SightEngine, too, found the image 99% likely to be AI-generated, further confirming that it was not real.
