A video allegedly showing Indian pacer Mohammad Shami apologising to the members of Muslim community for breaking ‘Roza’ (fast observed during Ramadan) during the ICC Champions Trophy has gone viral on social media platforms.
In the video, Shami allegedly says, “…I broke Roza that day. Muslim brother and sisters, please don’t get me wrong. I did not do it intentionally. I was forced to break my Roza, otherwise those people would have destroyed my career. I again apologise to my Muslim brothers and sisters.”
Multiple social media users shared the video claiming to show the cricketer “explaining” why he broke his fast. Newschecker, however, found the video to be manipulated.

Visuals showing Shami consuming a beverage during the recent ICC tournament, which coincided with Muslim holy month of Ramadan, left the people divided. While several social media users criticised him for breaking the fast, multiple others came into his support
The President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi called Shami a “criminal” in the eyes of Shariat (Islamic law) for not observing Roza. His remarks drew widespread criticism, with other Muslim clerics coming into Shami’s defence.
Fact Check/Verification
On carefully analysing the alleged clip of Shami, we observed that his lip movements and the audio were not in sync.
We then looked up the key frames of the viral clip on Google Lens which led us to a Facebook post by Mohammad Shami (@CircleofCricket.MDShami), dated April 11, 2024.
The post featured a video of Shami in the same attire, and background as seen in the viral clip. “Wishing the magic of Eid bring never-ending happiness, peace, and prosperity in your life. Eid Mubarak!,” the post stated.

The video was also uploaded on the official Instagram account of the cricketer in April 2024 with the same caption. In the video, Shami is heard wishing people on Eid and saying, “..Keep enjoying the sweets on Eid. Today is Eid. Celebrate the festival of Eid nicely.”

On comparing the keyframes of the viral clip with those of the video posted by Shami, we could conclude that the former has been digitally manipulated.

We found another Instagram post by Shami, dated April 11, 2024, featuring photos of the cricketer in the same attire as seen in the viral video. “Eid Mubarak to all my dear friends and family… May this special day be filled with joy, love, and blessings for you and your loved ones. Wishing you all peace, happiness, and prosperity on this joyous occasion,” the post stated.
Moreover, we did not find any credible reports stating that Shami has “apologised” for breaking the Ramadan fast during the ICC Championship Trophy.
The Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU), of The Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA), of which Newschecker is a part, ran past the audio on Hiya AI Voice Detection tool which concluded, “this voice seems generated or modified by Al” and found only a 4% match with live human markers, confirming that the video of Shami has been digitally modified to make the false claim.

Conclusion
Hence, we could conclude that an AI generated audio has been digitally overlaid on an old video to falsely claim that Indian pacer Mohammed Shami apologised for not observing Ramadan fast during ICC Champions Trophy.
