A press note issued in the name of Madhya Pradesh government is doing the rounds in WhatsApp groups. The press note states that the tenure of Sarpanchs (Decision makers of the villages) has been extended by five years in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak in the state. The press note states, “S. No. 1603 / Chief Minister / 22 / Note 23/2020- Since the economy of the state is critically hit by the COVID-19 outbreak, the state administration in the wake of a decision taken in the cabinet meeting, hereby, declares that under the clause (3) (b) of section 94 of MP Panchayat Raj & Gram Swaraj Act 1993, the tenure of Sarpanchs and Panchs, has been extended by five years.”

Fact Check

We received this claim on our official WhatsApp number for a fact-check. The claim is a picture of a press note allegedly issued by the Madhya Pradesh government regarding the extension of Sarpanchs’ tenure by 5 years.

As we begin investigating this claim, we first performed a Google search using the keywords “मध्य प्रदेश में सरपंचों का कार्यकाल पांच साल बढ़ा” and we found a report published by Hindi news outlet ‘Patrika’ along with other information.

The report published by ‘Patrika’ informs that some miscreants have forged the signature of the government officials and the press note is fake. The report further states that the ‘fake’ press note has created a ruckus among the village administrative officials and the top government officials have rubbished the press note, calling it ‘fake’.

We also found a report published by ‘Patrika’ on 13th March that states that the tenure of Pradhans has ended hence Sarpanchs will now take over as Pradhans. Generally, when the tenure of decision-makers of the villages ends, the government appoints an official as the decision-maker but in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, the state government has decided to allow the Sarpanchs to take the charge.”

We also checked the official website of the ‘General Administration Department’ of the MP government but we didn’t find any mention of any such press note. The same can be viewed here.

We then contacted an official of the ‘General Administration Department’ of the MP government who informed us that no such press note has been issued by the government. “The signature on the press note is forged and is intended to create rumour. We have notified the officials who work closely with the Gram Panchayats about the ‘fake’ press note. We are trying to trace the source of this misinformation,” said the official.

We have previously debunked one such ‘fake’ order that was issued in the name of the MP government claiming that the houses of trespassers of the lockdown will be locked by the government. Our fact-check report on this claim can be viewed here.

Hence, it is evident from our fact-check that the viral press note is ‘fake’ and the MP government has not issued any such press note.

No, He Is Not Bharat Biotech’s VP Taking The First Dose of COVID Vaccine ‘Covaxin’

Several social users posted a picture of a woman thrusting a syringe in man’s vein and claimed that the man in the picture is Bharat Biotech’s Vice President, Dr. VK Srinivas, and the first dose of the vaccine was administered on him.

According to a report in Live Mint, Bharat Biotech, an unlisted Indian vaccine maker, has received regulatory approval to start human clinical trials for its experimental shot. The phase 1 trial of Covaxine will begin next week. The company has planned to enroll 375 people in the first phase of clinical trials.

We found that the same image is viral on Twitter and Facebook with a caption, “Dr. V. K.Srinivas, Vice President, Bharat biotech, taking Corona vaccine clinical trial immediately after taking the first dose. He is the first person in India to take vaccine developed by him and his team in Bharat Biotech. Look at the confidence.”

Fact Check

As we began fact-checking the claim, we looked for some media reports backing the claim, but we did not find any authentic information to corroborate.

However, during our research, we came across the statement tweeted by Bharat Biotech. In a statement posted on their Twitter handle, Bharat Biotech said that individual images and messages circulated on social media platforms had not disseminated by Bharat biotech. The image is a routine procedural blood draw for testing all production staff.

We now searched, if Dr.VK Srinivas is the Vice President of the Bharat biotech. During our research, we did not find any results for his name. We found that Dr. V Krishna Mohan is the Executive Director, and T Srinivas is the Chief Financial Officer of the management team of the pharmaceutical.

Conclusion

It is evident from our fact check that social media users circulated a false image claiming that the vice president of Bharat Biotech has undergone the first clinical trial of the coronavirus vaccine.

There Is No Doctor Named Mujahid Hussain In The Ministry Of AYUSH

Claim

A tweet posted on 25 June claims that Dr. Mujahid Hussain allegedly from the Ministry of AYUSH banned Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali medicine Coronil

This viral tweet has been circulating on social media platforms in the last few days. The post also asserts that Dr. Hussain thinks Ayurveda can’t be promoted to cure the virus.

Fact check

In the recent past, Baba Ramdev claimed that Coronil and Swasari have shown 100% favorable results during the clinical trial on COVID-19 patients. These medicines are part of a corona kit by Ramdev-led Patanjali which includes a third medicine called Anu Tel. Among these the Ayurvedic drug: Coronil is the most popular drug in conversation because it claims to cure coronavirus infection in just seven days.

Soon after this, Union AYUSH minister Shripad Naik said that Coronil should not have been advertised by Patanjali Ayurved until AYUSH, which stands for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy approved it.

The claim about Dr. Mujahid Hussain as well as other related claims have been circulating on social media platforms after the controversial Patanjali Ayurveda “cure” had been announced and the Centre asked them to stop its advertising.

The Ministry of AYUSH issued a statement on 23 June on Patanjali Ayurved’s claims related to the treatment of COVID-19.

PIB Press Release

Latest news reports state that an FIR has been filed against Baba Ramdev for misleading people and propagating Patanjali Ayurveda drug Coronil as a cure for COVID-19.

Our team reached out to the Ministry of Ayush to verify this claim. They clarified that there is no doctor by the name Mujahid Hussain in their ministry. Nor did the ministry fire any doctor or medical officer recently. Related claims on social media are fake.

You can read our Hindi fact check debunking this claim here

Another related claim has been clarified by the Ministry of AYUSH.

Additionally, we did not find any news stories which supported this claim.

Conclusion

The lack of any news reports supporting the claim in context as well as our direct conversation with a member in the Ministry of AYUSH makes it clear that there was no Dr. Mujahid Hussain banned Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali medicine Coronil
