Claim:

English Translation: This video is from Rajasthan. These people pick poor women, rape them and the Police doesn’t even oppose. Spread this video as much as possible so Police is forced to arrest these perpetrators.

Verification:

If you are active on social media and if there is one thing which you can’t ignore, it is the overwhelming thoughts on rapes. There are different voices and opinions on this issue but what is scary amid all this is the rising frequency of fake news, misinformation and disinformation. Ever since its inception, social media has turned out to be a platform for million unheard voices and the voices if well articulated with stats are much likely to get heard. Stats undoubtedly speaks for themselves but at the same time, manipulation of stats or stats presented in a doctored fabric can mislead.

Talking of the claim, it contains an emotional appeal – claims with an emotional appeal are more likely to be shared by common people and this is the reason why the claim went viral within hours.

As we began to fact check the aforementioned claim, we first performed a reverse image search by generating the keyframes from the video. The reverse image search led us to a Chinese website which published this story on 28 September 2017.

It was evident from the story published on this Chinese website that the incident took place at least 2 years ago. Now, we performed a Google search with the same keyword as mentioned in the claim and this led us to the source of the claim.

The Twitter post was made on 8th December while the video we found was uploaded on YouTube on 7th December with the same description as of Twitter claim. We found the same video which was uploaded on YouTube in 2017 with the same claim as mentioned in Twitter claim.

Police arrested Two for abducting minor girl and thrashing mother

We found a story published in the news portal DNA which suggests that the incident took place on September 11, 2017 in a village in Jodhpur named Kalu Khan Ki Dhani. As per DNA story, Ahmad Khan got his minor daughter married to a man named Shaukat. However, the girl’s mother Nemat, refused to let her daughter go with him until the girl turned 18. Shaukat reached the girl’s village along with his friend Iliyaas and forcibly took the girl away

while brutally attacking the girl’s mother. The police took a suo motu cognisance after the video went viral and arrested the accused.

Rajasthan: Two arrested after video of kidnapping minor girl, beating up her mother goes viral

Rajasthan: Two arrested after video of kidnapping minor girl, beating up her mother goes viral – The incident took place on September 11 this year.

Video viral in the wrong context

After going through the findings collected during our fact check of the claim, we reached the conclusion that the video showing minor girl being abducted is true but the context is wrong. There are no unabated rapes as the claim makes where the police is a mere silent spectator.

Result: Misleading
