Fact Check
A woman in Gaza hugging the remains of her son found amidst the rubble of her home devastated by an Israeli attack, after a year-long search.
The archived version of the post can be seen here, which has clocked 12.1K views so far.
Newschecker noticed that there was not a speck of debris on the women’s clothing or face, while the background was blurred, raising our doubts on whether it was digitally created.
We then ran a reverse image search, which led us to an uncropped version of the viral photo, uploaded as part of a carousel post on Instagram by a user, in.visualart, on March 21, 2025.
“Note: This visual representation is an Al-generated image created for illustrative purposes. + photoshop,” read the disclaimer on the post. The original image also has a watermark reading, “Designed by in.visualart”. The page’s Instagram bio states that it is run by Islam Nour, a designer who uses “photoshop+illustrators+Ai tools”, further confirming that the viral image is digitally created.
Although the viral image is fake, there have been multiple reports of Gazan residents searching through the rubble to find the remains of their relatives killed in Israel’s war on Gaza. The reports can be seen here, here and here.
