Fact Check
Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan has passed away in judicial custody, according to an alleged press release from the government.
The archived version of the post can be seen here. We have received this ticket on our Whatsapp tipline (+91-9999499044), too, with users requesting us to fact-check it.
Newschecker noticed that the purported press release was undated and had glaring errors like the word “isetively”, instead of “is actively”, and “realfirm” for “reaffirm”, indicating that it was fabricated.
We then ran a keyword search for “Imran Khan death”, which led us to this Hindustan Times report, dated May 11, 2025, stating that Pakistan’s ministry of information and broadcasting had called a press release announcing the death of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan “fake” and urged the public to “reject irresponsible behaviour.”
We found the X post by Pakistan’s ministry of information and broadcasting, dated May 10, 2025, which debunks the viral press release, calling it fake news.
Newschecker then reached out to the media department of Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who confirmed that the letter is fake, stating, “Mr Khan is safe and healthy and is waiting for his petition to be heard at the respective courts.”
