Claim: Video of a Hindu family in the Giripur area of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh, attacked and killed by Muslims

Fact: The viral video is from Bihar’s Purnea, where a woman killed her three children before committing suicide.

In wake of attacks against minorities in Bangladesh, a disturbing video is going viral on social media, showing three children and a woman, all dead. Users sharing the video claimed that the family was attacked by Muslims in Bangladesh’s Giripur area of Mymensingh district, and that the woman was raped before she was killed.

Fact Check/ Verification

A reverse image search of a keyframe from the viral video reveals that a similar video was uploaded to a YouTube channel named City Halchal News on November 7, which reported on an incident from Rauta area of Purnea district, Bihar, where a woman allegedly killed her three children before taking her own life, following a quarrel with her husband.

Further investigation reveals that the video was posted on the X handle of a local news outlet named, Khabar Seemanchal on November 6, 2024, with the same information.

Additionally, reports published by TV9 Hindi and Jagran stated that the deceased was identified as Babita Devi, aged 26. The three children who lost their lives were named Riya Kumari (8), Suraj Kumar (6), and Sujeet Kumar (3). The deceased’s husband, Ravi Kumar, worked in Gujarat. He had returned home on October 30 to attend a puja in the village. On the day of the incident, November 5, he had gone to the temple. When Ravi Kumar returned home from the temple, his wife did not open the door despite his calls. He then sought help from the neighbours to break down the door. Upon entering the room, they discovered that Babita Devi and her three children were dead.

Newschecker contacted local journalist Jasan Javed to verify the viral video, who confirmed that the video is from Bihar and that the incident is linked to a family dispute.

Newschecker also reached out to Gyan Ranjan, the SHO of the Rauta police station, who confirmed that the video was indeed from Rauta and that the woman and her three children died by suicide due to family troubles.

Conclusion

Thus it is clear that the viral video is from Bihar and does not show a Hindu family attacked and killed in Bangladesh.

Result: False
