Video purportedly shows protesters marching towards the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh, alleging that the Indian government is sheltering the murderers of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi and former PM Sheikh Hasina.
The viral video dates back to 2022 and the protests are not related to Sharif Osman Hadi’s death.
Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of Bangladesh’s student uprising last year, died while undergoing treatment at a Singapore hospital on December 18, 2025. Hadi, a spokesperson for the Inquilab Mancha platform, was reportedly shot in the head by masked assailants in Dhaka on December 12, 2025. Soon after the news of the youth leader’s death broke, thousands of protesters took to the streets in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh to demand that his killers be arrested. Many media offices and cultural institutions of the country were attacked and set on fire.
Amid this situation, a video is circulating on social media with the claim that it shows an agitated mob marching towards the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh, alleging that the Indian government is sheltering Osman Hadi’s murderers and the former PM of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina. A reverse image search of key frames from the viral clip led to a TikTok account that shared the same video with identical claims. In the footage, a large banner carried by protesters clearly shows the words “June” and “Islami Andolon Bangladesh.”

2. AP News report from June 2022 matches the visuals
Further investigation found a June 16, 2022, report by AP News titled “Thousands march in Bangladesh over comments about Islam.” According to the report, thousands marched in Dhaka demanding condemnation of remarks made by two Indian ruling party officials that were considered offensive to Prophet Muhammad.

3. Visual similarities confirm reuse of old footage
A comparison between the viral video and images published by AP News shows identical surroundings, including building positions and the arrangement of people leading the procession, confirming the footage is from the 2022 protest.

4. Other media corroborate the 2022 protest
Other Bangladeshi media outlets, such as The Business Standard and The Daily Star, published reports at the time, including similar images and information.
5. Recent protests followed a different pattern
Following Sharif Osman Hadi’s death on December 18, 2025, the protests that have erupted across Bangladesh since the death of Sharif Osman Hadi. Protests were held at the residence of the Indian Deputy High Commission in Chittagong on the night of December 18. Security at the Indian Embassy in Gulshan was also strengthened. But the viral video does not show these events.
