Hindu Man In Bangladesh Thrashed By Muslims For Protesting Against Abduction Of Daughter? Here’s The Truth Behind Viral Video

A 31-second video has gone viral across social media platforms with the claim that it purportedly shows a Bangladeshi Hindu man, Haradhan Roy, being thrashed by “radical Muslims” in Bangladesh’s Naogaon for protesting against the alleged abduction of his daughter, Anjana Roy by one Abdul Hakim.

Fact Check

Newschecker first ran a keyword search for “Haradhan Roy Anjana Roy Naogaon Abdul Hakim”, which did not lead us to any reports about such an incident, raising our doubts.

We then ran a reverse image search of keyframes, which led us to a clearer and longer version of the video on Facebook, dated May 14, 2025, stating that it shows an attack on Nirmalendu Das Rana. The viral excerpt can be seen from the 00:26 mark, while the second part of the viral video (from the 00:18 mark) can be seen from the 01:34 part of the two-minute video on Facebook.

“Nabiganj’s prominent political figure, municipal Awami League secretary and Kargaon Union chairman Nirmalendu Das Rana was recently hanging out with some of his friends at a hotel in Sylhet city. One of them was Abul Hossain Jibon, central joint secretary general of the People’s Rights Council and owner of Arju Hotel in Nabiganj. Sources say that a ‘friend’ betrayed him and informed the leader of a student political organisation about Rana’s location. At that time, at 9pm, students and people wearing masks came from Fatema Restaurant in Rikabibazar in Sylhet city and took Rana away. At that time, friend Jibon tried hard to save Rana, eyewitnesses said. Then they took him to the Madan Mohan College area after beating him. At one point, the incident was reported to the Sylhet Metropolitan Police’s Kotwali Model Police Station, and a group of police led by Lamabazar Police Outpost IC SI Ali Hossain reached the spot and handed over the politician. There are multiple cases against Rana. In addition, there was a serious allegation of attacking Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists in Nabiganj in 2014 against Nirmelendu Das Rana. Many people have also been seen posting on Facebook that they were waiting for this day,” read the Bangla post.

Taking a cue, a relevant keyword search led us to this Rupali Bangladesh news report, dated May 14, 2025, featuring a screengrab of the viral video. According to the report, Awami League leader Nirmalendu Das Rana was thrashed by students in Sylhet, before being taken to Madan Mohan College and then handed over to the Kotwali Model police station. Kotwali Model police station officer-in-charge Md. Ziaul Haque reportedly said, “The students and the public brought the Awami League leader to our police station. There is a case against him for attacking students participating in the July-August movement,” referring to the mass uprising last year that ultimately led to the ouster of the then-prime minister, Sheikh Hasina. A similar news report can be seen here, stating that the viral video shows Nirmalendu Das Rana, a former general secretary of Nabiganj Municipality Awami League and chairman of Kargaon Union Parishad No. 7.

The Bangladesh CA (chief adviser) Press Wing had also taken to Facebook on May 20, 2025, addressing the same video that had gone viral then with another claim around Rana.

“…Rana was not abducted by anyone, rather was handed over to police by some locals after they found him loitering in a market in Sylhet city. Nirmalendu Das Rana was already an absconding accused in multiple criminal cases. He was the prime suspect in a case filed in September 2024 for attacking a rally organized by political opponents.  He was also sued for assaulting students during the July-August uprising in 2024,” read the post.

None of these reports and posts, however, state that the man in the video is a Bangladeshi Hindu beaten up by Muslims for protesting the alleged abduction of his daughter, further confirming the viral claim to be false.
