The inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha, Indian cricket team’s entry into the T20 WC Finals, the NEET 24 row made the headlines this week, attracting social media attention. And, as an expected outcome, misinformation followed. From false claims of arrest of NEET paper leak accused from the Congress’ Deoghar office to old video of Sonakshi Sinha linked to her wedding festivities, here are our top fact checks from this week:

Viral Video Of Nehru ‘Admitting’ That He Was Not Involved In The Fight For Independence Is Manipulated

Several social media users, including verified handles, shared a black and white footage of Jawaharlal Nehru’s interview to show him admitting that he wasn’t involved in the Indian freedom struggle. Nehru is also heard talking about the Muslim League and the partition in the old video. Newschecker, however, found that the video is not authentic, and has been digitally manipulated. NEET Paper Leak Case: Accused Not Arrested From Congress’ Deoghar Office, Video Viral With False Claims

Several social media users, including verified handles, are sharing a video purportedly showing the accused in the NEET paper leak case and claiming that they were arrested from the Congress party’s office in Jharkhand’s Deoghar. Newschecker, however, found that no arrests were made from the Congress’ office in connection to the NEET paper leak case. The viral video of the accused is actually from Patna.  Read more here

Users Booking Train Tickets For Others To Be Punished Under New IRCTC Regulation? No, Viral Claim Is False

Several social media users detailed an alleged “new IRCTC regulation” stating that individuals can only book tickets for blood relatives or those with the same surname using their personal IDs. It further states that booking tickets for friends or others could lead to a hefty fine of Rs. 10,000 or a jail term of up to 3 years, or both. However, Newschecker found the claim to be untrue. Viral Video Showing Gigantic Statue Of Virat Kohli At Times Square Is Actually CGI

Several social media users, including verified handles, shared a video showing a gigantic golden-coloured-statue of Virat Kohli at Times Square in New York City. The footage shows the cricketer’s statue installed in the middle of multiple skyscrapers with display boards featuring adverts for Duroflex. Newschecker, however, found that the video is in fact CGI, and does not show an actual statue of the cricketer. Read more here.

Viral Video Of Sonakshi Sinha In Black Lehenga Is Not From Her Wedding Festivities

A video of actor Sonakshi Sinha donning a black lehenga is going viral on social media platforms amid news of her wedding to Zaheer Iqbal. Those sharing the video claim that it showed the Heeramandi actor’s look on her wedding day. Newschecker found the claim to be untrue. The video dates back to May, 2024, and shows Sonakshi Sinha in black lehenga for a fashion show. Read more here.
