Born in Kampala, Uganda, Zohran Kwame Mamdani moved to New York City with his family at the age of 7. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a Uganda-born Indian scholar and a respected political thinker, and mother Mira Nair is a renowned Indian-American filmmaker. He is currently a New York State assemblymaker from Queens, making him the first South Asian man to serve in the NYS Assembly as well as the first Ugandan and only the third Muslim to ever be a member of the body.
A keyword search for “NYC Mayor” on Google led us to the official website of New York City, featuring Eric L. Adams as the current Mayor of the city.
We then looked up keywords “Zohran Mamdani,” and “NYC Mayor” on Google, which yielded multiple reports identifying him as the Democratic “nominee” for the Mayoral Elections. We did not find any report stating that he has been elected to the post yet.
One such report by CNN, dated June 25, 2025, stated, “New York State assemblyman and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani declared victory in a speech as he is poised to win the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, with his top challenger Andrew Cuomo conceding the race.”

“Primary Elections are held so that voters registered with a qualified political party may select their party’s nominees to the general election for partisan offices. Because a primary is a party election, only voters registered with one of the parties qualified to conduct a primary in New York City may vote in their party’s primary,” stated the official website of the NYC Board of Elections.
The party nominees, who win the primaries, along with the independent candidates then contest the general polls to be elected to public office.
Notably, New York is a closed primary state, and hence only voters registered with a specific political party can participate in the primary election.
An X post by the official X handle of The Democrats also congratulated Mamdani for becoming the “Democratic Nominee for Mayor of New York City.”
