Newschecker began by scanning the official websites of the NHAI and Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, but did not find any recent circular/release stating that the authorities will impose toll tax on two-wheelers travelling on national highways from July 15, as widely claimed.
We then looked up keywords “NHAI, “toll tax” and “two-wheeler” on Google which led us to an X post by the NHAI, dated June 26, 2025, clarifying that the viral claims about introduction of toll tax for two-wheelers are fake. “Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. #NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers. #FakeNews,” it stated.

Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari also called out the misinformation, and corroborated, “Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed. The exemption on toll for two-wheeler vehicles will continue fully. Spreading misleading news without verifying the truth to create a sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this.”
Government’s PIB Fact Check also termed the posts, claiming that the two-wheelers will have to pay toll charges on national highways from July 15, as “fake,” asserting that the NHAI has not made any such announcement.
